Many people use aromatherapy at home for stress relief, but aromatherapy for stress in the workplace can be very beneficial as well. The workplace can be one of the biggest sources of stress in your life. Office stress can come from back stabbing co-workers, demanding work loads, or just negativity in general. In order to protect your health and be able to function normally, you need to find ways to reduce your stress level, and short of changing your career, using aromatherapy for stress is a great solution.
Although you are in control of your reactions, there are several essential oils that have been proven to calm the body, your emotions, and your mind. Employers have begun to realize the positive effect of alternative health practices in the workplace, and one study has shown that aromatherapy at work helps workers in some of the most stressful careers to remain calm and stress free.
How to Reduce Stress With Aromatherapy
As you can probably imagine, working with cancer patients is an emotionally taxing job with high demands that cause burnout. The James Cancer Hospital in Columbus, Ohio conducted a study using essential oil diffusers to dispense essential oils over a 6-week time span.
Each day nurses deal with life altering situations, where some patients die and they must deal with their stress on a day-to-day, hour-by-hour basis. Secondhand stress itself is something that affects everyone, so staff gets get a double whammy in some areas.
A study was presented at the Oncology Nursing Society’s 39th Annual Congress that showed nurses dealing with cancer patients were able to improve their own health and job performance using essential oil diffusers in the office.
Before and after studies of workplace stress measured four things: worry, demands, tension, and lack of joy. Everything improved except lack of joy, but according to the study, that coincided with an unusual number of patient deaths.
If you suffer from workplace stress, you might seek out calming scents and invest in a diffuser or other aromatherapy method that won’t interfere with those around you. It could help you see your job in a whole new light – and protect you from the burden of each and every workday’s tasks.
If you feel the need for some stress reduction, one oil you might want to diffuse is bergamot essential oil. Bergamot is referred to as a sunny essential oil and is believed to help reduce anxiety, depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
Besides uplifting your mood, bergamot oil is also used to treat urinary tract infections because it has antiseptic properties. It has also been used to regulate appetite or in facial creams to help with oily skin and acne.
